Hello, World
This publication serves two purposes. First, personal, and brutal truth is that I have a blog with an obscure name that no one can remember. The age of personal blogs is largely a bygone era now, but I still find myself regularly craving to write and thus I write into a void. Writing just for writing’s sake is not enough for me - I want feedback, to learn, and support, to encourage me to continue. The first purpose of this publication is a rebrand of my old obscure blog and an experiment, to see if a different medium makes a difference and whether my writing can build an audience and a community.
Second, the more outward looking reason is related to what I plan to write here, and what will, hopefully, be interesting to you, the reader. I work in tech, but tech is not what defines me. What defines me is a broad range of interests that have very little to do with my career, but… in a strange loop - all of those interests have shaped how I see software engineering - the work itself, the relationships between people & tools, and the processes.
In this newsletter I want to share the observations that I make, and some “stories from the trenches.” There will be very little to no code here. Some of the observations may come across as obvious, in which case it is a confirmation that I am probably on the right track. Some will be a reframing of one way of thinking into another. And others - my interpretation of old and new software engineering books and lore. Most of those observations will be rooted in my own personal experience, but I hope as I write more - I will hear more about your experiences too.
I don’t know how regularly I will be able to write this, in that way your inbox is safe, but I have a few drafts. Some of the ideas that I will be covering soon:
What can Mark Twain teach about software engineering;
My battles with Gall’s Law and the lesson I learned from it;
A reframed view of what it takes to release a code change.
Occasionally, I will republish an old blog post, if it fits the theme - so that everything is under a single roof here.
In the interim, if you just found this publication - nice to meet you. If we’ve met before - thank you for your support. I hope you will enjoy this publication as much as I enjoy writing it.
